Ansgar’s Expertise in Semiconductor Fabrication Support

The world of semiconductor fabrication is one of cutting-edge technology and relentless precision. Every step of the process, from material selection to final product testing, requires a tightly controlled environment to ensure the quality and functionality of these incredibly intricate components. Even the slightest fluctuation in temperature, humidity, or air quality can have disastrous consequences.

This is where Ansgar steps in. While our piping expertise is well-established, our capabilities extend far beyond, encompassing the mechanical installations that are critical for maintaining the perfect environment for semiconductor fabrication. We offer specialized installation services for two crucial elements: Recirculating Air Handlers (RAHs) and Make-Up Air Handlers (MAHs).

Recirculating Air Handlers (RAHs)

Imagine a vast cleanroom, the heart of a semiconductor fabrication facility. Inside this meticulously controlled space, rows of sophisticated equipment work tirelessly to create the building blocks of modern electronics. RAHs play a vital role in safeguarding this environment.

As the name suggests, Recirculating Air Handlers are responsible for, well, recirculating air within the cleanroom. But it’s not just a simple matter of moving air around. RAHs perform a multi-step process to ensure the air is pristine and fit for the delicate task of semiconductor manufacturing:

  1. Filtration: RAHs employ a series of high-efficiency filters, often HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, to remove dust, airborne particles, and other contaminants that could compromise the integrity of the wafers being processed. These filters are incredibly effective, capturing particles as small as 0.3 microns, roughly 1/70th the width of a human hair.
  2. Temperature and Humidity Control: Semiconductor fabrication requires specific temperature and humidity ranges to prevent warping or other defects in the wafers. RAHs are equipped with coils and dehumidification systems to precisely regulate these parameters, creating a stable and optimal environment.
  3. Airflow Management: RAHs don’t just push air around randomly. They are designed to create a unidirectional airflow pattern, ensuring a constant stream of clean air washes over the wafers, preventing contamination from settling.

Why are RAHs so Important?

Even the most minute particle can have a catastrophic impact on a semiconductor. A single speck of dust can introduce a flaw in the intricate circuitry, rendering the entire wafer useless. RAHs play a critical role in maintaining this exceptional level of cleanliness by continuously filtering and controlling the air within the cleanroom.

Furthermore, precise temperature and humidity control are essential for several reasons. Excessive heat can cause the wafers to warp, while fluctuating humidity can lead to the formation of unwanted layers on the wafer surface. RAHs ensure these parameters remain stable, safeguarding the integrity of the entire fabrication process.

Make-Up Air Handlers (MAHs)

While RAHs are the guardians of clean air within the cleanroom, they cannot function in isolation.  Constantly recirculating the same air eventually leads to a buildup of heat, humidity, and even contaminants that have managed to evade the filters. This is where Make-Up Air Handlers (MAHs) come into play.

MAHs, as the name suggests, are responsible for introducing fresh, filtered air into the cleanroom. This fresh air supply helps to:

  • Maintain Air Quality: By introducing a constant stream of pre-filtered outside air, MAHs help to dilute and remove any contaminants that may have escaped the RAH filtration process.
  • Control Temperature and Humidity: The fresh air brought in by MAHs can be conditioned to meet the specific temperature and humidity requirements of the cleanroom, assisting the RAHs in maintaining a stable environment.
  • Pressurization Control: Cleanrooms are typically maintained at a slightly positive pressure compared to surrounding areas. This helps to prevent the infiltration of unfiltered air from outside. MAHs play a role in ensuring this slight pressure differential is maintained.

The Synergistic Dance of RAHS and MAHs

Think of RAHS and MAHs as partners in a critical dance.  RAHs meticulously clean and recirculate the air within the cleanroom, while MAHs introduce fresh, pre-filtered air to replenish the system and prevent contaminant buildup. This continuous flow of clean air ensures the environment remains pristine, ideal for the fabrication of high-performance semiconductors.
